Day Six

Meditation: Studying God’s word

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:14-18

Paul taught Timothy not to engage in idle talks with people but to rather invest his time into reading, studying and meditating on God’s word. This is what attracts God’s approval. It is also what builds up a Christian in his walk with God and prepares him or her to effectively handle any emerging issues of false doctrines or teaching of the word of God. This is the secret of how to handle false teachers. You develop yourself to be a master of the scriptures through diligent study of Scriptures and staying away from quarrelsome words.

There were false teachers in those days and Apostle Paul took time to expose them and the wrong teachings they were spreading. He also in verse fifteen show that the most effective way to deal with false preachers is through a personal study of the scriptures.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
[15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

What does it mean to study?
It means to devote time and attention to acquire knowledge. It also means to do a detailed investigation and analysis of a subject or situation. Study means to look at something closely in order to observe or have better understanding of it.

It is therefore without question that time and attention is required for effective study. This is why you must give to the study of God’s word. It enables you to have deeper and better understanding of God and his word. It builds up your confidence level in discussing Bible doctrines and puts you on the class of intellectuals. It is when you study the scriptures that you cannot be tossed around by every wind of doctrines.
Ephesians 4:14 KJV
[14] That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Studying helps you to grow as a christian and to mature from a baby to an adult in your relationship with God.  Studying prepares you to have answers to questions that others may have concerning what you believe and stand for. Study prepares you to effectively deal with false teachings from false prophets, pastors, teachers or preachers.

At the time of the writing of Paul’s letter to Timothy there were false teachers who were confusing the Church and making Christians give up their faith. Paul therefore admonished Timothy in verse fifteen to give himself to study so that he would become a grounded preacher of God’s word who would not be ashamed. This is another effect of study. You won’t be ashamed to speak in the gathering of people of knowledge and you would not be shy to discuss your subjects. You also will not be shy or ashamed to confront false teachings and false teachers.

The teachings of false teachers and prophets are dangerous. They are like cancer that spreads rapidly and eventually kills its victim. In verses sixteen and seventeen the scripture describes such teachings as vain, profane and cancerous. “their word will eat as doth a canker” .

Vain means empty, useless, worthless. Profane means not scriptural, not Biblical. These two words describe conversations that depict worthless and false teachings of the word of God. And we are told in verse sixteen to shun them, reject them and keep away from them. They lead to more ungodliness.

It is our duty as believers to prepare ourselves to stop those who spread false teachings and stop their messages. Hymenaeus and Philetus are examples of such people. They were into profane and vain babbling so they ended up in error of the truth, teaching that the resurrection had already taken place and by their false teachings they caused some people to loose their faith.
2 Timothy 2:18 KJV
[18] Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

Those who overthrew their faith were those who did not give attention to study the word of God. They did not understand the scriptures by themselves and for themselves. What they knew were what they heard from people, they did not study to find the truth for themselves.

The clear route to understanding the scriptures and withstanding false teachings and challenges of life is through personal study of the scriptures.

In other for you to be rooted and grounded in the word and doctrines, you must develop the attitude of a good student who always return to search the books to discover the truth by himself.

Acts 17:10-11 KJV
[10] And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. [11] These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

1. Pray for inner strength to shun idle talks, empty and meaningless discussions and thoughts and philosophies that are not biblical.
2. Ask the Lord for the spirit of a serious minded student of the Bible who loves to study the word of God for himself.
3. Pray for the spirit of discernment to discern false teachers of the word of God and pray for boldness to reject them and their teachings

Faith Confession
1. I declare by the grace of God that I will not give myself to idle talks, vain discussions and profane philosophies but I will shun them and stay away from people who engage in them
2. I declare that I will give my time and attention to the word of God and will study to show myself approved of God and an unashamed disciple

Memory Verse
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
[15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
