SPIRIT AND LIFE DEVOTIONALS

Day Ten

Meditation: The judgement of the Living and the Dead
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:1
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 15:50-53; Revelations 20:4-6, 11-15

The first verse of this chapter is a timely reminder of the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and what will happen at the moment of his appearing. 1 John 3:2 also tells us that Jesus will appear someday and we shall see him. Amen.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 we understand that the second coming of Jesus will happen suddenly at the sound of God’s trumpet and that Jesus will appear in the sky. When this occurs, the dead in Christ will rise to meet with Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 NKJV

[16] For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

1 Corinthians 15:52 NKJV
[52] in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

The appearing of Jesus at the rapture will begin the process of the end time judgement of the living and the dead as stated by Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:1.

1 Thessalonians 4:16
tells us that the dead in Christ will meet with Jesus first in the clouds before the believers who are still alive at that time will then be transformed and caught up together to meet with Him. The dead in Christ are people who die as believers. They are also regarded as those who die in the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 NKJV
[14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

It follows that those who die without knowing Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior will not rise and will not meet with Jesus when He appears at his second coming. There will be no gate crashing. It will all be automatic. You just have to have been born again to be raised up to meet with Jesus. This is the first phase of the first resurrection and of the judgement for the dead. Only the dead in Christ will be resurrected to be with Jesus at his appearing. The second phase of the judgement of the dead will the resurrection of the tribulation saints. Those who go through the great tribulation and are beheaded for their faith in Jesus will also be resurrected to meet with Jesus and join those at the rapture. They will all be with Christ for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:4-6 NKJV

[4] And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. [5] But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. [6] Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

All other dead will remain until the last judgement .

The final phase of the judgement of the dead is at the white throne judgement when the dead will be judged and thrown into the lake of fire. These are all who died without Jesus as their Lord and savior. They will be raised to face eternal judgement of God.

Revelation 20:11-15 NKJV
[11] Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. [12] And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. [13] The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. [14] Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [15] And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

It is important that you make a decision that you will never die without Jesus. You have to decide to live your life in Christ so that when you die, you die in Christ. That is the only way to escape the judgement of the spiritually dead.

The second judgement Apostle Paul spoke of in verse One of 2 Timothy 4 is judgement of the living.

As we saw in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the living are those who are alive at the time of his appearing for the rapture. The living will be judged and only those who are alive and in Christ that will be taken up (raptured) to meet with Jesus in the clouds. All others who are living will be left to face the great Tribulation that will come upon the world after the rapture. This is the judgement of the living.
2 Timothy 4:1 NKJV
[1] I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:

This refers to the separation of the believers who are alive at the appearing of the Lord Jesus from other people who will be alive but not in Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NKJV
[16] For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. [17] Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

The living will be judged, some will be raptured to meet with Jesus in the clouds and to reign with him while others will be left to face God’s final judgement of the earth. At this final judgement the unrighteousness living and the unrighteousness dead shall be thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20:11,15 NKJV
[11] Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. [15] And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

When the trumpet shall sound only the righteous living will be caught up with Jesus. You must be prepared everyday and for the rest of your life to be amongst the righteous ones who will be spared from the final judgement and be raptured with Christ.

Prayers
1. Pray that when Jesus will appear in the clouds that you will be raptured to be with him.
2. Pray specifically that if you are alive at the coming of Jesus that you will not miss the rapture but that you will qualify to be with Jesus. Ask the Lord to help you keep yourself pure and prepared for the master.
3. Ask God to help you to live daily in Christ till the day of death such that if you are not alive at the appearing of Jesus that you will be raised up to meet with Jesus in the clouds.

Faith Confession
I declare that I am in Christ Jesus and by the grace of God I will Ramon in Christ till I die or be raptured alive.
